Got Lots of Passwords? Passpack 'em!

Password Security

A little while back, I posted an entry on password security, and how many folks rely on passwords that were used for multiple applications, ie. same password for email, online banking and wireless network, and were too weak in that they were easily brute-forced (short passwords like "1234") or easily guessed based upon readily available personal information, ie. wife's birthday or your pet's name.

If you find yourself in that situation, you are putting yourself and family at no small amount of risk, depending on what those passwords protect. In that same article, I mentioned a website/technology called Passpack and how I was migrating some of my passwords to it. So far, it's worked amazingly well, especially for the various website passwords that I've accumulated in all my wanderings and work.

For a free service, this is a great product, and once you get over the slight technical hump of learning how to use it effectively, it can prove very handy, especially if you want to set long, complicated (and not easy to remember!) passwords for your most important accounts. Logging into my 4 GMail accounts is now handled through Passpack, which is secured by a dual layer of strong pass phrases that I have committed to memory, which in turn gives me access to over 20 different accounts - and that number is growing everyday!
