Website Remodel Underway

As you can see, if you are a returning visitor to this site, I've been making some changes. This is part of a larger redesign that is merging 2 other sites that I run that are not focused on technology consulting. The other half of modctek.com will be called "Unplugged" and will focus on the non-consultative side of my interests, particularly video games, movies, books, music, as well as a venue to publish some of my fiction, poetry and music compositions.

The reaction on the internet to Apple's "latest creation" seems to be tepid at best. In short, folks were expecting the second coming of the "jesus phone" and instead, they got the iPod Touch, super-sized. I've been considering the purchase of some form of light-weight, internet-capable device with a decent sized screen, but the iPhone OS is just too locked-down for my tastes. The fact that it still can't do multitasking is just plain annoying. It feels like they rushed this product to market, and I can't imagine many folks will buy into this, especially if they just bought a 3GS iPhone.

The weakest point in all security systems is, of course, human. In all but the extreme cases, a lot of what we secure is protected by the thinnest of layers: a simple, typed password. This article from Windows Secrets (an excellent, if technical email newsletter) has some excellent guidance on strengthening your personal password-fu.
